Before our first journey overseas with a baby, travelling with children wasn’t so much of a travel. Simply load all our possessions into the back of a very large Volvo, fill up for petrol, leave, stop for food, fill up for more petrol and then arrive.

But going on a plane would present entirely new challenges: limited baggage allowances, keeping a child in one space for a long period of time and feeding in a confined space.

This is the place to share tips with those facing the same dilemmas.

I learnt the following:

Spend as much as you can on the plane ticket: low cost where they charge you for every gram of luggage is out, normal airlines let you take your buggy to the gate (as long as it’s reasonably sized), give the little one some luggage allowance and are more accommodating of families travelling.

If you can, splash out on an upgrade which gives you those extra 10kg that might cost you a fortune anyway.

Equally, if there are two adults and a baby travelling, consider buying the little one a seat of his or her own – that way you will get three seats in a row, which makes meal times and sleep times a lot easier.

As you can see, I have a policy of trying to spend my way out of difficult situations – but if you’ve got more cost effective ways to make life easier, we’d love to hear them.

As we are focusing on hotels for our current survey, please do make sure you’ve been to our Survey page and given your feedback there! And by all means use this page to share your experiences of what hotels do that is good or bad!

Our latest experience was a four-star hotel in Seville. The first thing I got wrong was the location of our hotel. We read lots of guide books and web sites as always and noticed that when they talked about hotels, they were indicating how close each one is to the Giralda, the famous cathedral and focal point of Seville. We were pleased to see that the hotels we liked the look of would be close to the cathedral, the Alcazar and so many other famous Seville landmarks. What I forgot, of course, was that with cathedral comes BELL TOWER! And with bell tower comes, well, bell ringing! And not just ordinary bell ringing, oh no. This is serious bell ringing. Every quarter of an hour, one loud chime for the quarter-hour, two for the half-hour, three for … you get the gist. So, on the hour, four chimes – PLUS additional chimes to record the time for you, in case you happened to be asleep (no chance with those rock-hard beds keeping you awake). So at five in the morning, you get 4 chimes for the hour plus 5 more to tell you it’s 5am. This is so lovely! And yes, you had tried earlier to put the air-conditioning on to drown out the sound. And you freeze because the air-con thermostat doesn’t seem to adjust the temperature – it’s arctic, icy, ice-berg or ossified. This is holiday? Thankfully, Seville is beautiful but you need to think about hotel location if you are in any way sensitive to noise….

For those of us who “travel in hope but mainly hopelessly”, you will recognise our experiences with car hire! I look at all the nice pictures of cars listed in the different groups, I persuade my husband to increase our budget and go up a group to get something better, and he always reminds me that the descriptions say “or similar” when they show a car. I always seem to get the worst of the “or similar’ collection and no, it’s not what I would call similar! Invariably the rental company we choose will be the furthest walk in the arrivals hall and the furthest point from the car park. It will be either not staffed at all with a large queue or will have one staff member and a customer who wants every aspect of the insurance form explained in a language that staff member does not speak. The car we are allocated is never in the part of the car park I am directed to, so we are wandering around foreign car parks with a trolley of luggage after a long flight looking for a car in a sea of vehicles that all look exactly the same for miles ahead. This is not the best start to your trip! Once I find ‘my’ car, the previous driver is certain to have been a chain smoker. If the car has (allegedly) been valet-cleaned, that will be a different definition of valet clean from my understanding of those words… and if it’s dark when we collect it, you can be sure we won’t be able to find the light switch or the handbook. I’m sure none of that has ever happened to you, so you will have nothing to add to this page!

Facilities and services at airports vary so dramatically across the world, don’t they? We welcome your comments on the best and worst at different airports but please make sure to date your comments so that we can check if anything has changed since your last visit! Which are the places to avoid or to include in your itinerary, if possible? You may not have much choice over your departure airport but on longer-haul trips, where you need a stop-over, it can really help to know the differences in facilities, temperature, cleanliness etc between certain airports!

What do we look for from our perfect airline? The girls among us will never be happy until airlines provide separate toilets on board for men and women, and that’s not likely to happen any time soon. We only know of one airline that did this and they are no longer in business! So by all means give us your comments about what airlines could do (or have done) better to improve our experience of flying with them, but money is such a key driver here that we don’t know what will ever be done to improve comfort on affordable flights…..
